Course Overview

The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET) is an advanced teaching qualification for those who wish to become fully qualified teachers/trainers. Receiving your Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training means you can apply for a full Qualified Teacher Learning & Skills Status (QTLS). This enables you to teach in all settings, from early learnings all the way up to further education, this includes schools and colleges.

Alternatively, if you do not wish to become QTLS, this course allows you to teach sector specific skills to learners in the private training industry, FE and HE colleges up to a level 5.

 

Key Details

  • This is an advanced course and is suitable for learners who are looking to teach in all settings as a fully qualified teacher/trainer, or NVQ, QCF, RQF courses in their subject specialism up to Level 5.  
  • There is no requirement or expectation that you are currently in a teaching position to be enrolled on this course. 
  • Once qualified you can teach up to a level 5 in your subject specialism in many different sectors, including private training providers, further education colleges or higher education settings as well as workplaces. Furthermore, you can apply for QTLS status and teach in all settings. Please note that you have 24 months to complete this course. 

 

How is this course delivered?

There are two key ways we deliver this course:

  • 1. Virtual classroom course package: Learners can expect a 40 week programme containing two weekly taught evening sessions online led by our highly qualified staff. Our teachers will support you through all the units of work that make up the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training. 
  • 2. E-Learning course package: This learning method can support your continuing professional development without the need for a virtual classroom. Learners complete their studies at a pace which suits them. We support learners with all of the materials needed to complete the course and access to a qualified teacher if required.

Entry Requirements 

There is no requirement or expectation that you are currently in a teaching position to be enrolled on this course, although this will help with reaching your teaching hours quota. You must have at least a level 2 qualification in literacy and numeracy. There is also no requirement for learners to complete the Level 3 Award in Education and Training or the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training prior to commencing this qualification. If a learner has achieved any units prior to enrolling on to the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training in their previous learning, they will not have to repeat the units and the credits will be carried over.   

You may be required to complete an initial assessment to ascertain your suitability for this course before you begin.  To access our world-class virtual learning classrooms you must have access to a secure internet connection and a laptop/PC/tablet using up to date Windows, Apple or Android operating systems.

For those learners who are already working with students covered by DBS (disclosure and barring service) regulations there may be a requirement to undertake a DBS check. You will be informed before you enrol on the course whether this is relevant to you.

 

Course Specification

Learners will be taught the roles of the teacher and how to sequence the learning, planning and delivering of sessions, along with how to provide effective assessment and feedback. The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training is broken down into the following units:

  • Developing teaching, learning and assessment in education and training
  • Teaching, learning and assessment in education and training
  • Theories, principles and models in education and training
  • Wider professional practice and development in education and training
  • Equality and diversity
  • Internally assure the quality of assessment
  • Teaching in a specialist area
  • Understanding the principles and practices of externally assuring the quality of assessment
  • Understanding the principles and practices of internally assuring the quality of assessment

(If a learner has achieved any of the above units prior to enrolling on to the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training in their previous learning, they will not have to repeat the units and the credits will be carried over)   

 

How is this course assessed?

  • Each of the units set out above have internally set and marked assessments that must be completed to pass the course. 
  • Teaching Practice - Learners must carry out 100 hours of teaching practice, of which 8 hours will be observed and assessed. Learners who are currently teaching or training students in their current role can be observed or assessed with their own learners in their place of work.

Progression - What further qualifications can I do after completing the Level 5 Diploma in Education & Training?

For learners that are wishing to achieve a Qualified Teacher Learning & Skills Status (QTLS), they must complete a portfolio with The Society for Education & Training.
